What is Uni Ranch ®︎?

The highest quality natural Japanse sea urchin grown on the world’s only Uni Ranch®︎

The world’s only Uni Ranch®︎ is located in the town of Hirono, Iwate prefecture. Sea urchins are omnivorous, so the taste and quality of naturally grown sea urchins are inevitably consistent. On the other hand, ranch-raised sea urchins feed on natural kelp and wakame seaweed, which ensure high quality, uniformity, and stable supply.

Four-year-old sea urchins from Kitasanriku Uni Rnanch®︎ are carefully raised for a year at the Sea Urchin Cultivation and Fishery Center located near port in the town of Hirono, and then released into the sea. After spending approximately two years in the offshore fishing grounds, the young sea urchins are released into the sea. 

After spending about two years in offshore fishing grounds, fishermen transplant the young sea urchins to the Uni Ranch®︎( a propagation trench).After four years of growth, the sea urchin are harvested by fishermen and shipped from Kitα-Sanriku Factory.

Three Secrets to make a top quality sea urchin

"Ranch" and "juvenile sea urchin" ensure high quality and stable supply.

First year

Juvenile uni are born at the uni cultivation center.

2nd to 3rd year

Uni are released into the open sea, and are raised in natural fishing zones.

Fourth year

Uni are transplanted to the Uni Ranch (into proliferation trenches) which spans 15 kilometers. They are fed wild kelp to make them delicious

After four years of growth, the sea urchins are harvested by fishermen and shipped from the Kita-Sanriku Factory.

Sea urchin harvested from the Sea Urchin Ranch® is processed and packed under strict hygiene and quality control at the FSSC 22000 certified.

During processing, no additives such as alum are used, and sterilized seawater is used for packing.

In order to maintain the original vivid color, rich aroma, and rich flavor of sea urchin, we conduct thorough freshness control from landing to processing and distribution.

Sustainable sea urchin fishery

The Uni Ranch® ensures sustainable and stable production and shipments.

The four-year sea urchin production at the Hirono Sea Urchin Ranch is carried out in a four-year cycle, from raising young urchins, releasing them into the sea, raising them on the ranch, landing them, processing them, and shipping them out.

By strictly managing the rotation from production to shipping, we have realized a sustainable sea urchin fishery that never catches all the sea urchins.

Product informatuon

Four-Year Sea Urchin from Hirono Uni Ranch is available from the end of April to mid-August.

The natural fresh sea urchins from the Hirono Uni Ranch are processed and shipped immediately after being landed, using skilled techniques cultivated in the Kita Sanriku region.

Four-Year Sea Urchin from Hirono Uni Ranch" is sold from the end of April to mid-August.

In addition, some processed foods other than sea urchin for raw consumption are sold year-round.
